Within the next decade, software engineering jobs are projected to grow faster than nearly any other career field nationwide. In Ohio the future is particularly bright. With significant resource investments from the state government and a lively job outlook, students earning software engineering degrees in Ohio will find nearly limitless career possibilities upon graduation.

Software Engineering Landscape in Ohio

Throughout the state of Ohio, software engineering is a rapidly growing sector of the workforce. Reasons for this include robust investments from private and public enterprises as well as a commitment from government officials to make Ohio more innovative and future focused.

Several nonprofit groups have been established to support this vital mission, including InnovateOhio, a program that “is advancing the DeWine Administration’s commitment to leading an aggressive, innovative path towards a better and stronger Ohio.” Among the goals of InnovateOhio are to improve broadband access in both urban centers and rural areas, a vision that will create thousands of new job opportunities statewide.

The Ohio Innovation and Technology Association is “an independent, non-profit and non-partisan statewide organization of Ohio’s technology-driven companies and industry professionals operating at the intersection of business, technology and public policy.” With growing partnerships among leading tech companies in the state, OITA fulfills five key goals: industry promotion, advocacy, talent attraction and development, B2B engagement, and professional development networks.

Finally, the Ohio Innovation Exchange provides a single portal which makes it easier for “professionals searching for industry-specific expertise and resources from Ohio universities, as well as for university faculty seeking networking and collaboration opportunities.”

These leading groups make it possible for not only private corporations but nonprofit enterprises and universities to continue moving Ohio forward, creating exciting new opportunities for software engineering students and graduates.

Software Engineering Education in Ohio

Students seeking undergraduate, graduate, or professional certificate programs for software engineering will find many exceptional schools throughout the state of Ohio.

Undergraduate Programs

University of Mount Union offers a unique BS in Multi-Platform Software Development, a program that focuses on “the modern techniques of software construction and programming for a variety of device types, from desktop computers to smartphones, tablets to servers.”

Every student participates in a team-based software engineering project, which is a requirement for graduation. Students also have opportunities to further their research in the computer science labs, with access to Linux and OSX systems as well as a variety of specialized software.

At Miami University in Ohio, students can earn a BS in Software Engineering. In addition to integrated coursework in software architecture, construction, and quality assurance, Miami provides seniors with the opportunity to complete a year-long research project, maximizing their skills while preparing them to enter careers post-graduation.

University of Toledo offers a BS in Computer Science and Engineering that emphasizes lab work, research, and paid internships, which help students become career-ready by their sophomore year. Additionally, its dedicated Career Development Center helps students perfect their résumés, make industry contacts, and hone their interviewing skills to land their dream jobs.

Graduate Programs

At Bowling Green State University, the MS in Software Engineering program is designed for career-ready scholars who want to deepen their knowledge through rigorous academics and hands-on training. Graduates from BGSU have gone on to careers including front-end software engineer, full-stack developer, and AI/ML production.

University of Cincinnati offers a Master of Engineering in Software Engineering, one of the top programs in the state. And for graduate students eager to apply their education to the workforce, the degree can be completed in as little as one year.

Certificate Programs

At DeVry University, students can choose from a variety of undergraduate certificate programs, including specializations in engineering technology, software design and solutions, and Internet of Things. They have locations throughout the state as well as remote learning options.

Cleveland State University offers a Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering, featuring exciting research opportunities. Recent funding has supported projects in robotics, biomechanics, renewable energy, and sustainable engineering.

Software Engineering Jobs in Ohio

For new software engineering graduates and mid-career professionals looking to change jobs or industries, many Ohio-based companies are in search of top talent.

Concentrix is a global leader in customer experience technology. The company designs, builds, and runs CX projects ranging from infrastructure and staff solutions, to content trust and security, to mobile innovation. Both Great Place to Work and Fortune magazine recently ranked Concentrix among the top-25 world’s best workplaces.

Founded in 1968 and referred to by IBM as the original database company, Cincom has risen to become a multinational technology company. Its business application and development solutions “are geared towards enhancing your organization’s capabilities, optimizing processes and delivering a better experience to your customers.”

Cincom often seeks new software engineers and has offered both in-person positions and remote work opportunities.
